Phonics

Dear Parents,

Today we will begin studying vowel-consonant-e syllables.  In a vowel-consonant-e syllable, the word/syllable will end with an e.  The e is silent and it makes the vowel a long vowel.  Example:  Cap has a short vowel sound and cape has a long vowel sound.  We will study this syllable type for five days and there will be a spelling test on the 5th day.  You and your child can view this video on YouTube.  https://youtu.be/mxVWScxsOsc?si=DworWxsK3WPBw_db

The 2nd week we will study trigraphs tch and dge.  A trigraph is a group of three letters that make one sound.  I linked some videos you and your child can view at home.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41rarInjzqo&pp=ygUMdGNoIGFuZCBkZ2Ughttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7MOqgEol2V0&pp=ygUMdGNoIGFuZCBkZ2Ug

During the 2nd week we will also study words that have a soft c and soft g sound.  For example, the words circle and mice have a soft c.  The letter c makes a /s/ sound.  The words cage and germ have a soft g.  The letter g makes a /j/ sound.  Again, I linked some videos.  https://youtu.be/M1eCU5yZOJk?si=eyoTs0KVh8zKs3OD

Words to study:

On the 3rd week we will review and have an assessment on all of the above spelling patterns.

If you have any questions, please let me know.
